and the last time john boehner tried to put something on the floor, his caucus rebelled. he'd have to let the house vote its will. >> but you agree if the president of the united states supports it, most of the house democrats will support it. so you don't need a majority of the republicans, you need a few republicans to get to that magic number of 218. >> exactly. obama and pelosi seem to have a firm grasp on the house democrats. it's just a matter of getting it to a vote in the house. what's happened over the course of the day is we had this seesaw. when details leak out, that angers democrats, they go back to the negotiating room and fight for a bit more. then some details leaked out that there weren't enough spending cuts. that angered republicans. obama's comments angered republicans. so i think they're back in the negotiating room, republicans pushing harder on the spending cuts side. that's what we've seen through the the day. >> ali, based on my years of covering washington, the longer there's no final vote in the senate and house, the more likely this whole thing

the president and the vice president, they're going to meet with house speaker john boehner, minority leader nancy pelosi, senate majority harry reid and minority leader mitch mcconnell. that is happening this afternoon. jessica yellin is there. jess, what do we know about the president's plan to get everybody in the same room? do we think there's going to be something that comes out of this? >> reporter: well, this is one of those cases where we really are going to have to wait and see, and all the parties involved are also going in with a big question mark. the idea is the expectation by many of the participants in the meeting is that they hope that they will be able to discuss more details about a scaled-down fiscal cliff plan. and maybe that could lead to some sort of agreement ideally for all parties in which all the senators say that they will not filibuster it, and it can go to a vote. and then speaker boehner could, in theory, agree to bring it to a vote on the house floor after the house comes back on sunday. and then we would get all of this behind us before new year's eve.

., carol, you'll recall when talks fell apart last week between house speaker john boehner and the president as the president departed for hawaii he talked to reporters in the briefing room and he said "see you next week" so i think we had a sense he would be coming back earlier than initially planned and it was just a matter of when, not if, and he'll be heading back tonight, that's local time so he'll be traveling overnight, it's quite a long flight, nine or ten hours and he'll be back in d.c. by thursday late morning. >> any behind the scene talks over the holiday? >> reporter: right now the white house has been in communication with senate democrats but i've checked in with my sources even this morning, republican sources and they're still not in touch with senate democrats or the white house, so that's pretty key. i guess you can understand it right now the white house and senate democrats are trying to cobble something together as they work towards putting forth a proposal. ultimately it needs republican support in the senate and the house. those discussions have to take place at some
